Olympiacos FC announces signing of Gelson Martins. Our 28-year-old winger was born on May 11, 1995, in Praia, Cape Verde. At a young age, he found himself in Portugal where he joined Benfica’s Academy and then Sporting’s one, under whose flag he debuted in 2015 at the age of 19. In his spell with Lisbon-located club, he was capped 140 times, scoring 27 goals and serving 30 assists.
In summer 2018, Atletico Madrid signed him and in January 2019 he was sent to Monaco on loan. 6 months later, the French club bought him from the Spanish organization where he managed to feature 12 times and score 1 goal. In Monaco, where he belonged until recently, he played in 129 matches, netting 16 goals and proving 14 assists.
Martins is a 21-times international with the Portuguese team, having also been a squad member for the 2018 World Cup and the 2017 Confederations Cup. He has also played in Portugal’s National U-teams (U18, U19, U20, U21), whereas, at a club tournament level, he played in 14 Champions League fixtures and 18 Europa League ones.
