Olympiacos FC announces signing Portuguese Carlos Carvalhal as their new Head Coach.
Born on December 4th, 1965, in Braga, central defender Carlos Carvalhal featured in more than 190 fixtures of the Portuguese top flight league; in 1998, he kicked off his spell as a coach in Espinho, followed by Freamunde, Vizela, Aves and 3rd Division club of Leixões in 2022; he steered the latter to the domestic Cup final and their UEFA Cup qualification. In 2003, he secured promotion for Vitória Setúbal.
After his spell in Belenenses, Braga and Beira-Mar, he returned to Vitória Setúbal in summer 2007 to claim 6th place of their domestic league, qualify to the UEFA Cup and win the League Cup, in a season when his team had one of Europe’s best defenses.
In 2008 he signed with Asteras Tripolis, followed by Marítimo, Sporting CP and then Tukey’s Besiktas and Istanbul Basaksehir.
In June 2015, he took on Sheffield Wednesday to reach play-off final for Premier League promotion. In May 2017, he steered Sheffield once more to their promotion play-off stage and, in December of that year, he was signed by Premierleague side Swansea.
In summer 2019, he returned to his home country and the club of Rio Ave, to win most top-flight league points ever in the club’s history, whereas he led them to Europa League qualifiers. In 2021, he won the Cup with Braga and in the 2021-2022 season, he led Braga as far as the Europa League quarterfinals.
In summer 2022, he joined UAE’s Al Wahda, whereas his most recent club has been Celta, to help secure La Liga slot after beating Barcelona.
