In G. Karaiskakis stadium, Olympiacos earned a 4-0 win to Atromitos in Stoiximan Super League MD2 and Diego Martinez expressed his satisfaction on the red-and-white outfit’s display.
Below follow words of Olympiacos’ Spanish coach during the Atromitos post-match Press Conference:
Olympiacos seemed now to be quite “compact” and 2 young guys (Ntoi and Retsos) playing center defense. Do you think we this duo is set to be capped often in the future?
We played a good and structured match; we worked well in attack and in defense. We presented an improved display; we had one goal cancelled and many goal-scoring chances and we could have scored more. Collaboration and chemistry between players were good but I do not want to stick to specific players; besides, in previous matches chemistry between Retsos and Freire has been also good. I don’t think it has anything to do with age or whether they are Greeks, Spaniards or Brazilians. I don’t think it matters; what matters if for all players to be available. We have a long season ahead of us, including many fixtures and for a team to perform this way, they all have to be bonded amongst them and available. There has to be chemistry between all players in the team and, generally speaking, I think this has been a fully-fledged performance form our side due to their great organization as a whole; therefore, we do not focus on 2 or 3 players specifically but on the entire team work.
Did you expect the team to play so well that early in the season? Also, how come the new signings get integrated so easily?
It’s about the combination of the things you mentioned. We knew from the beginning that we were to play against a tough opponent who traditionally makes it hard for us. We performed the way we wanted and this was thanks to the hard work and good way our team delivers. This is how successful results are produced but this was far from easy since we played two demanding matches in a row that we both won and also produced a good display. This is thanks to the hard work and good chemistry within the team. So, it is a combination of the things you asked and new players become easily part of the team process because the squad features a strong team spirit and they all work well amongst them. Certainly, we have to keep on working hard, there are many things to improve. As I said following the Čukarički tie, we should not be too happy following a good result the same way we should not be too sad in a negative one. The important thing is that the side earns the wins we want, sometimes while playing well and sometimes not, but we display stability in our performance and we do not get carried away by a good or a bad evening.
