One of the core pillars of Olympiacos’ very essence is giving back the love it receives from its fans. Not only on the sports field but, more importantly, outside of it. In the realms of culture, art, and literature, these values should thrive and inspire the Greek spirit toward a brighter tomorrow, a future with insight, thoughtfulness, and love for both the homeland and the world. Mr. Evangelos Marinakis, President of Olympiacos, a key supporter of significant social and cultural endeavors, attended the closing of the exhibition “Traveling… Spain” at the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum in Myrtia, Heraklion, Crete, on Sunday, July 17.
Accompanied by the CEO of Olympiacos FC, Mr. Yiannis Vrentzos, Mr. Marinakis was more than a simple visitor. Since 2014, the President of the club has been a major supporter and benefactor of the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum in Myrtia, Heraklion. His sole aim is to foster the continuous upgrade of the museum and to help increase the frequency of exhibitions hosted, such as this one.

Mr. Marinakis Among Locals
Evangelos Marinakis’ love for his homeland and for Greece as a whole is undeniable, and the people of Myrtia are well aware of it. The President of Olympiacos visited the village where the museum is located on Sunday afternoon, just after 7 pm, and was warmly welcomed by the museum’s staff and the villagers.
He walked around Myrtia, dined with locals, and discussed topics ranging from their home area, Olympiacos, and shipping, to other subjects. He then toured the museum, taking the opportunity to see the unique exhibition up close. His visit lasted quite a while, during which he was guided through all areas of the museum, taking many interesting things in.
What “Traveling… Spain” Means
This year’s event, dedicated to Spain, a country that profoundly influenced the life and work of the great writer, concluded on July 17, 2016. Through six days of events in Heraklion and Myrtia, both young and old had the opportunity to experience fragments—images, sounds, colors, tastes, and scents—of Kazantzakis’ Spain. After all, Spain was the country that, after Greece and specifically his birthplace Crete, Nikos Kazantzakis loved the most.
The festival was sponsored by Evangelos Marinakis, who hails from Heraklion, along with many friends and supporters of the museum, and was co-organized by the Region of Crete, the Municipality of Archanes-Asterousia, and the Cervantes Institute. It was a unique and special exhibition, attracting many visitors throughout the event (from the 12th to the 17th of the month).
