In a packed house of 45,000 spectators, Olympiacos played, Saturday noon, against Liverpool in the historic Anfield ground for a special Steven Gerrard testimonial. The final match result was 2-0 for the English.
Some great moments, identified with Olympiacos and the club’s grandeur, occurred before kick-off. The celebration during which Olympiacos FC president, Mr Vaggelis Marinakis, honored Steven Gerrard was nothing but moving. Our side’s leader presented an award to Liverpool FC’s great captain for his remarkable career. After exchanging wishes, Gerrard delivered a wreath on Olympiacos executives to bring back to Piraeus and place at the memorial of the Gate 7 victims.
In 24’, the English outfit passed the ball around neatly, with Aspas drilling it across for Allen to tap home.
In 61΄, Suarez, Carragher and Henderson came on for Liverpool; it took no more than 1 minute for the latter, in 63’, to chip it in for 2-0 from inside the box following a beautiful through-ball by Sterling. In 68’, Machado fired a good shot, but the ball got deflected for a corner kick.
In 85ʼ, Spearing substituted Steven Gerrard. The full house stood up for a warm and lasting clapping for the Englishman, as a token of Kopites love for him! After the final whistle, Olympiacos players applauded our fans (roughly 100 supporters in one stand) who attended the match. Steven Gerrard came out again for a lap of honour around the pitch and all Olympiacos players extended their congratulations to him.
