Our side’s most significant friendly -in many aspects- for this season is scheduled for Saturday (3/8, 14:45).
Our Olympiacos has been selected by Liverpool for this testimonial fixture in Anfield to honor Steven Gerrard and celebrate with the fans his multi-year contribution to the Reds and his 630 caps. The match will be broadcast live in Greece by NovaSports1, while it will be also available recorded via the official Olympiacos Youtube channel the following day.
Since the original announcement about the friendly fixture, English fans have fostered that initiative and Anfiled is expected to be packed in order to honor the club’s legend, as well as our “Legend”!
Besides, Olympiacos has been selected personally by the English international who asked for an opponent that meant particularly to him in his illustrious career.
Gerrard had scored against our side on December 8 2004 in the Champions League Group stage, for a campaign that drove the Merseyside club up to the victorious final against Milan.
So, it is not by chance that he chose to share this particular moment with us, a decision honoring both clubs.
Something from the heart!
Our side was absolutely positive to this proposal from the first moment, since the there is more in this testimonial friendly match than to honor this iconic player.
Our President, Vaggelis Marinakis, decided to give away all our side’s earnings – a percentage of match proceeds – to charity foundations and that sense of social responsibility made another point of contact between both clubs.
Moreover, Liverpool is going to offer all earnings to the Steven Gerrard Foundation, established by him and trying to support children in need.
What is the Steven Gerrard Foundation
The Steven Gerrard Foundation (SGF) was founded in February 2011 and aims at helping children in need.
Thanks to sensitivity of Reds’ iconic captain about all kinds of childhood difficulties, this Foundation raises money to support children with health problems, family issues, homeless kids or those in need of medical care or education.
In cooperation with other organizations, this Foundation is active in the UK and the rest of the world, and focuses particularly on the player’s home city, Liverpool.
So, being part of this friendly match is undoubtedly an honor for Olympiacos and once again confirms our side’s international acknowledgment!
