A final result not fully fitted to the side’s performance in the pitch was the outcome in Olympiacos’ second pre-season friendly. The squad suffered a 4-2 loss against a clearly fitter adversary that is Freiburg.
The match kicked off badly for our side, since it was found with a 3-goal deficit as early as in the 21’. It was Mehmedi in 4’, Smidt in 15’ and Mehmedi again in 21’ who converted. Freiburg was obviously more ready (the German championship starts even earlier) and, on the other side, Olympiacos showed that, reasonably enough, more work is needed, as the side finds itself only in the second week of pre-season training.
In the meantime, Samaris launched a superb shot in 18’that was saved by Svolof! In 23’, Cholevas delivered a free kick, awarded at a spot way to the side, aiming straight to the goal, just to see Svolof clearing the ball instinctively! Dominguez well-launched shot in 26’ just passed off target!
In 30’, Mitroglou received the ball left in the box and laid it to Maniatis, who launched a powerful shot just to get deflected off Svolof’s post! In the first half’s last chance for Olympiacos, Dominguez crossed neatly from the right, Mitroglou took the header, the ball slipped through Svolof’s hands but didn’t cross the goal line!
In the second half, our side featured many subs, but also set out in goal-style! In 47’, Olympiacos exercised pressure and Tatos made perfect use of Svolof’s mistake, to turn it into 3-1 with a soft tap. Siovas shot in 54’ was just off target. A momentary lack of concentration by Carroll allowed Zouk to make it 4-1 in 72’. Olympiacos reply was swift and Olaitan met beautifully Karagounis feed from the left and, following the original shot by Fetfatzidis, tapped it in from close range for 4-2.
